Material Concerns

Material on popular bags Australia

Luggage is made of many different materials, with each material having its own advantages and disadvantages. In general the mode modern materials are preferable, with older material becoming obsolete. But even the modern material offer a great deal of choice.

Polyester – cheap but often of reasonable quality, and certainly value for money. The strength of polyester varies, but the denier number of the fabric is a good indication of this. This refers to the width of the individual strands of the polyester material. A higher denier number means thicker stands and therefore a noticeably stronger bag. Of course it will also be heavier.

500 -2000 denier polyester is suitable for luggage.

Ballistic nylon – This is a fairly durable material that is easy to clean, so it is popular with moderate priced luggage. But the nylon is hard to dye, so the colours tend to be dark.

Cordura Nylon – This is not quite as tear resistant as Ballistic nylon, but it can be dyed many colours.

Aluminium – This was popular for many years, being extremely durable while still being reasonably light. But other hard, more modern materials have proved more popular than aluminium in recent years.

Polycarbonate – Lighter than aluminium whilst still being quite durable, this is semi-hard, flexible material.

Offering the best features of most material this is very popular, and is available in many colours.

Polypropylene – a lighter material than polycarbonate, but still quite strong.

ABS (acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) – another cheap yet reasonably hard material.

ABS – Polycarbonate combination – by mixing the materials the cost is moderate and the strength is fairly high.
